Family counselling is unique in that it usually involves multipe people with complicated histories and interactions. This could be siblings, relatives, in-laws, and children. The dynamics shift when more that two people are involved, alliances and triangles form causing added dimensionsto communication cycles. It becomes necessary that all parties be involved and contribute to the process. Communication skills become very important such as, reflective listening, non-judging, expression, respectful confronting making requests with choices and consequences etc.
Issues like; different parenting styles, roles that each member of the family plays, sibling rivalry, blended families, adoptions, extended families and contracting are but a few of the possible challenges that may be presented.
